Estate Planning

Many people ask me: “Do I need a Will”.  As surprising as it may sound, I do not always answer them with a yes.  That is because not everyone does need a will.  Although I do advise that everyone have an estate plan.

An estate plan can vary greatly between people.  For most people an estate plan consists of a Will, a Power of Attorney, and a Health Care Directive.  When I refer to an estate plan, I’m generally talking about two main objectives. The first is to make sure you are taken care of in case you are incapacitated or otherwise not competent to care for yourself and your property.  The second it to make sure you are able to distribute your assets in the manner you wish upon your death.

The first objective is often not thought about, but very important and fortunately very easy to deal with.

The second objective is what most people worry about the most.  For some, their plan is to spend everything before they die.  Although that is often more difficult that it seems.  For others they want to provide for their loved ones, often children, sometimes minor children.  Whatever your objectives, you need a plan.  And I can help you execute that plan with the use of a Will, a Trust, or other transfer schemes.
